Visiting Rwanda Tips & Advice
Rwanda is one of Africa’s most inspiring destinations—a country where lush mountains meet modern cities, and where deeply moving wildlife experiences are matched by human warmth and resilience. As you prepare for your safari, gorilla trekking adventure, or cultural immersion, a little planning goes a long way. This guide outlines essential travel advice for Rwanda—so you arrive informed, equipped, and ready to connect.
Whether you're joining us on a luxury gorilla trekking safari, a family-friendly cross-country itinerary, or a solo rainforest retreat, Activentures Africa Safaris ensures you travel with clarity and care.
Safety & Security
General Travel Safety
Rwanda is known for its safety, orderliness, and welcoming spirit. Kigali is one of the cleanest and safest cities in Africa. Violent crime is rare, and tourism infrastructure is well developed. That said, be mindful in markets and crowded areas—keep valuables close and avoid flashy displays of wealth.
Border Regions
- Avoid travel near the Rwanda–DRC border, especially near Goma, due to unrest in eastern Congo.
- Exercise caution around the Burundi border, especially in remote rural areas.
Activentures monitors all routes and ensures up-to-date regional guidance for your itinerary.
Entry Requirements
Visa & Entry Info
Rwanda offers visa-free entry for African nationals and visa-on-arrival for most others, including citizens of the U.S., UK, EU, Canada, and Australia. You can also apply in advance through the Rwanda e-Visa portal.
Documents to Prepare
- Passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your date of entry
- At least one blank passport page
We recommend printing a copy of your itinerary and your accommodation confirmations.
Health & Vaccination Advice
Required & Recommended Vaccines
- Yellow fever vaccination is required if arriving from a risk country
- Routine vaccines (MMR, Tetanus, Hep A/B) should be current
Malaria
- Present throughout the country
- We recommend prophylactic medication and repellents—especially if visiting Akagera or Lake Kivu
Recent Health Advisories
- As of 2025, no active outbreaks (e.g., Marburg) are reported, but we recommend checking CDC and WHO for the latest updates
Activentures provides medical support guidelines and access to trusted clinics near key safari regions.
Gorilla & Chimpanzee Trekking: What to Expect
Permit Requirements
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes, Chimpanzee Trekking in Nyungwe, or Gishwati require advance permits. We secure these for you based on your trip dates. They are limited—early booking is essential.
Fitness & Expectations
Trekking involves steep terrain, muddy trails, and altitudes above 2,000m. While gorilla families vary in location, treks range from 30 minutes to several hours. A walking stick and porter support are available—and highly recommended.
Rules to Protect the Primates
- Stay 10 meters from the animals
- No flash photography
- You may be turned away if you have cold/flu symptoms
- Face masks are required
This is one of the most meaningful wildlife experiences on Earth—come prepared, move with respect, and savor every second.
Transportation & Road Conditions
Getting Around
- Rwanda drives on the right-hand side
- Roads are paved and well-marked across the country
- Expect curving, mountainous terrain—travel times are often longer than distances suggest
Private Safaris vs. Self-Drive
We strongly recommend private guided safaris with Activentures. Self-drive is possible but not ideal for first-timers due to signage and terrain.
Public & Urban Transport
- In cities: Moto-taxis are cheap and efficient. Always wear the helmet provided.
- Buses connect towns, but travel comfort varies greatly.
Practical Travel Tips
Currency & Payments
- The Rwandan Franc (RWF) is used nationwide
- Credit cards are accepted in lodges and upscale restaurants; always carry cash in rural areas
- ATMs are widely available in Kigali, Gisenyi, and Musanze
Connectivity
- Local SIM cards with data (MTN or Airtel) are inexpensive and reliable
- Wi-Fi is available at most safari lodges and hotels
Language
- Kinyarwanda is the national language
- English is widely spoken in tourism and business
Tipping Guide
- Safari guide: USD $10–20 per day
- Lodge staff: USD $5–10 per guest per day (pooled)
- Porters: USD $10+ per trek
- Restaurants: 10% is appreciated but not expected
Emergency & Support Contacts
