Before You Go
Visa Requirements
Citizens of most countries, including the United States, are required to obtain a visa to enter Uganda. The easiest way is through the Uganda eVisa system (https://visas.immigration.go.ug/). A Single Entry Tourist Visa costs USD 50 and is valid for 90 days. If you're planning to visit Rwanda or Kenya as well, consider applying for the East Africa Tourist Visa for USD 100, which allows multiple entries between all three countries.
Be sure to apply at least two weeks in advance and print a copy of your approval to present upon arrival.
Vaccinations & Health
All travelers must present proof of yellow fever vaccination to enter Uganda. It's also strongly recommended to consult a travel clinic about:
- Malaria prophylaxis (essential)
- Typhoid and Hepatitis A
- Routine immunizations (MMR, DTP, etc.)
Bring a personal supply of any prescription medications, mosquito repellent, and a basic travel medical kit.
Travel Insurance
Comprehensive travel insurance is highly recommended. Ensure your plan includes:
- Medical coverage (including evacuation)
- Trip cancellation and delays
- Coverage for high-risk activities like gorilla trekking safaris or white-water rafting adventures
Activentures Africa Safaris can recommend providers or assist in reviewing your policy to ensure you're fully protected.
What to Pack for Uganda Safaris
Packing for Uganda is all about being prepared for both adventure and variation in climate. Your safari may take you through rainforest, savannah, and highland regions—so layering is key.
Clothing Essentials
- Lightweight, breathable clothing in neutral colors (avoid black/blue for tsetse flies)
- Long-sleeved shirts and trousers for sun and insect protection
- Fleece or light jacket for cool mornings and high altitudes
- Waterproof jacket (especially in rainy seasons)
- Comfortable walking shoes or hiking boots
- Safari hat, sunglasses, and scarf or buff
Accessories
- Daypack for excursions
- Dry bags for electronics during boat rides or rain
- Reusable water bottle
Safari-Specific Items
- Binoculars
- Camera with extra batteries and memory cards
- Insect repellent with DEET
- Sunscreen (SPF 30+)
- Travel adapter (Uganda uses UK-style plug, 240V)
Activentures will provide additional gear lists for specialty safaris like gorilla trekking, birding safaris, or mountain climbing expeditions.
Money & Payments in Uganda
Currency
The official currency is the Ugandan Shilling (UGX). It’s best to arrive with some US dollars (issued after 2009, clean and crisp) and exchange them at reputable forex bureaus in major towns or airports.
ATMs are available in cities and larger towns, but not in remote safari areas. Visa is more widely accepted than Mastercard, and cash is still essential for rural transactions, tips, and local purchases.
Credit Cards & Mobile Payments
While many lodges and upscale restaurants accept credit cards, there may be a surcharge. For everyday use, cash or mobile money (like MTN Mobile Money) is preferred. Activentures can help you set up a temporary mobile wallet for easier on-the-ground transactions.
Tipping Guidelines
Tipping is appreciated but not mandatory. Here’s a quick guide:
- Safari guide: $10–$20 USD per day
- Porters or camp staff: $2–$5 USD per day
- Gorilla/chimpanzee trackers: $10–$15 USD per trek
Always tip in local currency when possible.
Health & Safety Tips
Staying Healthy
Drink bottled or filtered water—avoid tap water, ice, and uncooked street food.
- Wash hands regularly and carry hand sanitizer.
- Use insect repellent and sleep under mosquito nets where provided.
- Stay hydrated, especially during hikes or game drives.
Activentures safaris are designed with your well-being in mind, including safe food options, hygiene-conscious lodges, and well-maintained vehicles.
Personal Safety
Uganda is generally safe for travelers, but it’s wise to take basic precautions:
- Avoid walking alone at night, especially in cities.
- Keep valuables secure and carry a copy of your passport.
- Be cautious when withdrawing cash—use ATMs during the day and inside banks when possible.
- Follow your guide’s instructions during wildlife encounters and in national parks.
Our team monitors local conditions and stays in touch throughout your journey to ensure your safety and comfort.
Cultural Etiquette & Responsible Travel
Cultural Considerations
Uganda is a warm and welcoming country with deeply rooted traditions. A respectful traveler is always appreciated. Here are a few tips:
- Greet people with a smile and handshake—formal greetings matter.
- Dress modestly, especially in rural areas or when visiting communities.
- Ask permission before taking photographs of individuals.
- Public displays of affection are best kept discreet.
Ugandans are generally open and friendly, and engaging with curiosity and kindness goes a long way.
Responsible Travel
At Activentures, we promote safaris that are ethical and regenerative. Here’s how you can contribute:
- Support community-owned lodges and craft cooperatives.
- Follow Leave No Trace principles on treks and in parks.
- Avoid single-use plastics—bring a refillable water bottle.
- Respect wildlife by keeping a safe distance and staying quiet during encounters.
Your travel choices can directly support conservation efforts and local livelihoods—something we proudly build into every Activentures itinerary.
Connectivity & Communication
Mobile Phones & SIM Cards
Uganda has strong mobile coverage in urban centers and decent service in most safari regions. You can purchase a local SIM card from MTN or Airtel at the airport or in major towns. SIM registration requires your passport. Data packages are affordable and reliable for email, GPS, and social apps.
Activentures can assist with SIM setup on arrival or recommend lodges with consistent Wi-Fi service.
Internet & Wi-Fi
Most high-end lodges offer Wi-Fi, but speeds vary by location. Expect slower or no connectivity in remote parks like Kidepo. Plan to disconnect in the bush and reconnect in urban hubs like Entebbe or Kampala.
If constant access is important, consider purchasing a portable MiFi device with a local data plan.
Emergency Contact
Activentures provides 24/7 in-country support throughout your trip. You’ll receive local contact numbers, an itinerary app, and access to our regional operations team for peace of mind.
