About Murchison Falls Safari

Murchison Falls National Park is the oldest and largest safari park in Uganda which is made up of huge savannah plains, riverine forests and wetlands. The park was inaugurated in 1952 and it was named after the thunderous waterfall where River Nile cuts its path through a small opening and subsequently drops down the stream.

Its size and ecological diversity alone enable wildlife to survive in a relatively untouched environment providing visitors with an authentic wildlife experience.

Wildlife in the Murchison Falls National Park

The park contains a huge diversity in its wildlife.

On dry land there are usual sightings of buffaloes, elephants, warthogs, hyenas, Rothschild giraffes, lions, kobs, antelopes, waterbucks & the elusive leopards. Hippos and Nile crocodiles can be found on the banks of the Nile plus baboons, chimpanzees and other primates in Budongo Forest.

The Flora is so diverse from open savannah grasslands to dense tropical forests which provides this richness of species.

Things to Do

Savannah Game Drives

Game drives are conducted mainly on the northern bank of the River Nile, mostly on the Buligi Peninsula and Delta areas. The best game viewing drives are taken early in the morning as animals come out to feed on the wet soft grass while the predators spot and set out to catch their prey. The same happens in the late afternoons when it’s cooler for the animals to come out and feed just before sunset.

Nile Boat Safaris

A boat cruise along the Nile River to the base of the Murchison falls is one of the main highlights not to be missed while visiting the park. The most rewarding boat ride is done at  approximately 2pm just after lunch with the sun blazing. You will be able to catch sightings of a multitude of the animals along the river banks watering. From buffaloes, elephants, crocodiles, hippos to different bird species.

Because of the regulated numbers of guests visiting this park as a tourist you will have intimate & close-up visuals of the hippos, crocodile, elephants, and dozens of species of birds along the way.

Delta Cruise

For a quieter, bird-focused experience, a cruise down the Albert Nile Delta is a must. It’s one of the top spots in Uganda to see the rare shoebill stork, along with kingfishers, herons, and papyrus specialists. The Delta is best explored early in the morning when bird activity is highest and it lasts approximately 4-5hrs. We recommend bush breakfast as the cherry on top.

Chimpanzee Tracking at the Budongo Forest

Budongo Forest which is located within Murchison Falls has over 400 chimpanzees therefore for a Primate lover this is the park to visit. The terrain is fair so seniors and those who prefer easier treks would find this rewarding.

Birdwatching

The park is a birding paradise with more than 550 species recorded including shoebills, kingfishers, forest birds that are rare.

Fishing for Nile Perch

Lovers of fishing have an opportunity to engage in catch and release fishing of the renowned Nile perch in specific areas along the river.

Location and Access

The park is located approximately 305 kilometers west of Kampala.

By Road

The most popular means of access to the park is by road. The road is approximately 5-6 hours by road; it runs through Masindi, and enters Kampala, through the southern gate, at Kichumbanyobo.

It is only a 2-hour trip in case you are heading to the park and you are coming out of the Ziwa Rhino Sanctuary. The Rhino sanctuary is a perfect stopover point while traveling to Murchison Falls.

It can be reached in about 3 or 4 hours, by the northern gates as at Tangi or Wankwar, which are Gulu or Pakwach.

By Air

The flights can also be scheduled and charter flights between the Entebbe International Airport and other airstrips in the country including Pakuba, Chobe and Bugungu as an alternative which is quick and relatively comfortable.

It is recommended to take a 4×4 safari vehicle with a pop-up roof for safety and clear game viewing.

Best Time to Visit

Safari is possible throughout the year but the dry seasons experienced during the months of December to February and June to September are believed to be the best season of the year to see wildlife. Animals are also more concentrated around water sources especially during these months and the roads are easy to travel. Green season has beautiful scenery and a low number of tourists.

FAQs

How many days do you recommend to be spend in Murchison Falls National Park?

Three or four days will give you ample time to stop via the Ziwa Rhino sanctaury, enjoy 2 day game drives, hike to the top of Murchisons falls, enjoy a boat ride along the Nile, delta cruise with bush breakfast and go chimp trekking in Budongo forest.

What kind of wildlife can I expect to see on a typical safari day?

A typical day mixes river‑bank mammals with soaring birds. The early game drive brings you face‑to‑face with giraffes, buffaloes, elephants, kobs, warthogs, waterbucks and lions out hunting for prey. Birdwatchers will definitely get a glimpse of the kingfishers, herons and the iconic shoebill in the papyrus where they make regular appearances.

In the afternoon as the boat glides toward the gorge, you’ll catch elephants flushing to drink, buffalo herds grazing on the floodplain, hippos and the Nile crocodiles.

Do they have safaris throughout the year?

When is the ideal time of year to go on a murchison falls safari?

The dry months of December through February give you crisp game‑drive windows, short grasses and predictable waterholes, which makes spotting the big five a breeze. If you’re chasing the dramatic mist‑kissed waterfall and rainbow‑filled spray, the wet season from June to November is unbeatable – the Nile swells, the spray is thick and the scenery feels almost cinematic. Most travelers pick a shoulder month like March or November to enjoy good wildlife and fewer crowds.

So yes, the tours run all year long and each season has a different point of view.

Why is this destination special when compared to the others in Uganda?

The magnificent Waterfalls, Nile boat trips, Big 5 wildlife game safaris, Chimpanzees make Murchison Falls National Park a rare embodiment of natural beauty and wildlife.

Is a murchison falls safari suitable for families with young children?

Absolutely – the park is very family‑friendly, especially if you choose a lodge with child‑proofed pools and guided walks that keep little legs safe. Guides tailor the narrative for younger minds, pointing out “big‑foot” tracks and explaining why hippos are called river cows.

For seniors, the shorter drives and frequent rest stops mean you won’t be on a bumpy 4×4 all day. Just make sure you flag any mobility needs early so we can arrange wheelchair‑accessible rooms or a gentler itinerary.

How can I choose between a luxury lodge and a tented camp for my stay?

The choice really hinges on what you value most on the day‑to‑day. A luxury lodge offers air‑conditioning, en‑suite bathrooms and gourmet meals – perfect if you need a solid night’s sleep after a long drive or if you’re traveling with kids who need predictable routines.

A tented camp drops you inches from the water’s edge, giving you front‑row wildlife action and starlit evenings that feel raw and rewarding. In our experience, many guests start with a night at a lodge to shake off jet‑lag, then move to a camp for the core safari days.
