Whenever you go to any place with monkeys. It’s fun. Whether it’s a zoo or on safari, be sure the monkeys will mimic you. They will communicate with you in their own ways and instantly make a connection. People often offer them food, and they happily take it. (Well, in some cases they snatch and steal too). While on safari you need to know what do monkeys eat and how to behave around them?

While we might all think that monkeys only eat bananas, they however do eat other things. Fruits, nuts, flowers, and vegetables are also part of their diet but their favorite is always the mangoes. When on an African safari trip, monkeys are the one of the most visible and entertaining mammals that you find along the route. Knowing their feeding habits will make your experience more safe and meaningful.

Monkeys in East Africa

Rwanda, Kenya, Tanzania or Uganda Safari? You will see a variety of monkey species in East Africa. They live in multiple habitats from forests, plains and even near human settlements. While on safari you will see

  • Vervet monkeys
  • Olive baboons
  • Blue monkeys
  • Colobus monkeys
  • Red-tailed monkeys

Patas monkeys (in drier regions)

All the above monkeys have different dietary habits according to their species. Their food habits also depend on their social behavior and changing seasons. Monkeys have very adaptable behavior which means they can easily eat whatever they find. This is the reason they thrive across East Africa.

Herbivores or Carnivores?

Mango-vores …if that’s a thing! It’s their favorite! They do eat a variety of food. This includes flowers, vegetables and nuts. In some cases even meat too.

This means monkeys are not entirely herbivores or carnivores. Instead, they are omnivores by nature. They eat both plant-based and animal-based food. Which part they consume more depends entirely on their species.

  • Colobus monkeys eat leaves.
  • Baboons will eat everything that is edible.
  • Forest monkeys eat more fruits and insects. These are available here in abundance.
  • Those that live in the savannas eat roots, seeds and small animals.

This “eat whatever available” trait helps them survive in any habitat. They can even live in droughts and during food shortages. This is why they can survive seasonal changes.

Do These Monkeys Eat Meat Regularly?

No. Most monkeys eat meat occasionally. It is not a daily part of their diet. Olive baboons hunt cooperatively on rare occasions. Monkeys eating meat is more about opportunity than preference. They are intelligent and adaptable species.

What Fruits do East African Monkeys Eat Fondly?

Monkeys in the wild eat whatever they can easily find. Bananas are not commonly available in the wild. Figs are available all year so they eat them a lot. Wild berries, mangoes, papaya and guavas are also their food sources.

Bananas are more available near human life that is why we think monkeys eat more bananas. Eating fruits provides them with natural sugars for quick energy. In dry seasons fruits provide water content and essential vitamins.

In the wild many monkey species time their movements around fig availability. Their entire troop may gather when a tree is fruiting. So if you spot monkeys in one area. Chances are fruit trees are nearby.

Eating Leaves

Monkeys do eat leaves as a survival food. Not all monkeys can digest them properly. Their anatomy plays an important role here.

Leaf eating species include Black-and-white colobus monkeys and Angolan colobus. They have multi-chambered stomachs like cows. Their stomachs allow them to ferment tough leaves and extract nutrients.

When fruits are not available especially during the rainy season they opt for the leaves. In Kibale Forest National Park, Bigodi Wetland Sanctuary be sure to catch the colobus monkeys calmly feeding high in forest canopies.

Seeds And Nuts

These are powerful foods full of protein. Baboons mostly eat

  • Acacia pods
  • Hard seeds from savanna trees
  • Palm nuts
  • Grass seeds

Baboons, another type of monkey species, are particularly skilled at cracking hard pods. Their strong jaws and sharp molars help them. These foods provide proteins and minerals to their bodies. It’s important for their growth and reproduction.

Monkeys are also very good pollinators to stop the dispersal of seeds and help maintain health.

Insects and Small Animals

This is a direct source of protein. Monkeys usually look like carefree creatures. Don’t judge them by their innocent demeanor. They are very skilled hunters for small insects. They can catch

  • Ants
  • Termites
  • Beetles
  • Grasshoppers
  • Caterpillars
  • Spiders

Baboons also eat:

  • Bird eggs
  • Small reptiles
  • Rodents
  • Nestlings

The above provide a protein food source that is important for pregnant females and growing monkeys. If during a safari you see a monkey carefully inspecting leaves, they are actually hunting.

Roots and Barks

Roots and tubers are mostly dry-season survival food for monkeys. As monkeys are adaptable species during droughts, they dig for

  • Roots
  • Tubers
  • Bulbs
  • Tree bark
  • Gum and sap

In semi-arid areas, you find patas monkeys. They dig for underground foods. Baboons dig with impressive speed and coordination.

Monkeys And Human Food?

Watch out, or they may snatch it from your hand too. Monkeys often steal human food if they are near safari lodges or human villages. They will steal your bread, snacks, fruit, and even leftovers.

This may seem fun, but it is not a very good thing to do. Human food like snacks usually lacks proper nutrition. When monkeys eat these, it increases aggression in them. Feeding food from humans also increases dependency. It is against Safari rules to feed monkeys. This is both for human and monkey protection.

Changing Seasons And Monkey Diets

Changing seasons does not only change the safari landscapes but also the dietary habits of animals. As fresh-ripe fruits, shoots, flowers and insects are abundant during wet seasons, monkeys rely on them.In the dry season they usually eat leaves, seeds, tree gum, tree backs and roots.

Lots of other factors are also in play. Deforestation and climate change are affecting monkeys across East Africa. Due to this, fruit trees are becoming fewer. Human-wildlife conflicts are also impacting these creatures.

When you know these patterns, you can easily interpret their behavior while on safari. How Monkeys’ Diets Shape Their Behavior Monkeys’ diet and behavior are closely related.

  • They live in groups. We see food sharing and competition among them.
  • They have to eat food in daylight hours. So their daily activity pattern depends on their food.
  • If food is available in the area, their territory size will be large.
  • Some monkeys like Baboons travel long distances daily to access diverse food sources.

Colobus monkeys remain in smaller forest patches with stable leaf availability. How Monkey Diets and Safari Travelers Are Related Knowing what do monkeys eat makes your safari experience more fun. When you see monkeys, you will know their behavior. It will be easy to understand why monkeys gather in certain areas. How they interact with the ecosystem. If there is some food nearby or not.

You’ll appreciate monkeys as key ecosystem players. Monkeys are a common wildlife encounter in Safari. Understanding their diet turns casual sightings into meaningful observations. The local government is focusing on protecting forests. They are paying attention to preserving native plant species. Travellers and locals are being educated.

Safari travelers should also make conscious choices. Never give them food or put it in easy sight for them to reach. It does more harm than good. Respect the laws and protect wildlife.

More Than Just Bananas What Do Monkeys Eat
